Though there are different treatment options for kidney cancer, the treatment usually starts with surgery performed to get rid of cancer. If the cancer is only limited to the kidney, there wouldn’t be any further treatment needed. However, if the cancer of the kidney has moved past this organ, certain other treatments would be needed, too.

Of the different treatment options for kidney cancer, the doctor will select the adequate treatment plan based on a couple of factors, such as health, type of renal cancer present, and the spread of cancer, that is, if it is limited to the kidney or has spread to different organs.

Surgery
Usually, one of the first treatment measures for treating kidney cancer is surgery. The objective of the surgery is to get rid of cancer without hampering the normal functioning of the kidney. There are different types of surgeries performed for kidney cancer treatment:

Nephrectomy: In this surgery, the whole of the kidney is removed. At times, the bordering healthy tissues with some additional tissues surrounding it, including the adrenal gland, lymph nodes, and other structures are removed.

Partial nephrectomy: In this surgery, the doctor will only remove cancer and a part of the healthy tissue surrounding it.

Nonsurgical treatments
If the cancer is small or if the surgery is risky, it might be treated using a few non-surgical treatment measures, such as cold and heat. It includes:
Cryoablation: This is a treatment measure wherein a needle is injected into the tumor, and cold gas is released on it. The cold gas aims to freeze all the cells affected by cancer.

Radiofrequency ablation: This is the opposite of the previous treatment a distinct prone is injected into the tumor, and a current is passed through it to burn or heat the unhealthy cancer cells.

Treatment measures for recurrent or advanced cancer
At times, kidney cancer is recurrent and not curable. The treatment measures used in this case include:

Targeted therapy: In this treatment measure, the drugs are used for treating any particular abnormality, which might be existing in the cancer cells. On blocking these abnormalities, the cancer cells tend to die.

Surgery to remove as much cancer as effectively possible
If the surgeon is unable to remove the whole of cancer, he’ll try to get rid of as much cancer as is possible effectively.

Radiation therapy: Under this, a high-energy beam is used to kill unhealthy cancer cells. It is predominantly used when the cancer has reached distant organs like the brain or the bones.
