Pros and Cons Associated with Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous, or self-drive vehicles, might still be some years away from now. But they are also an inevitable part of the future of the automobile industry. Till these vehicles are launched for the general public, we can only consider the potential advantages and disadvantages of these vehicles. However, there are certain brands that have manufactured self-drive cars with limited technology. So, here are some  pros and cons of autonomous vehicles for you to know.

Pros

No more distracted drivers
This has to be one of the top advantages of having a self-drive vehicle while you are measuring the  pros and cons of autonomous vehicles . Distracted drivers account for a significant number of road accidents. For example, many drivers get distracted to check their phones while driving, and this lands them in a car wreck. But with autonomous vehicles, you will no longer have to worry about getting distracted again. Robots will be at the wheel, and they just have one job to do – drive the car safely.

Economic benefits
Car crashes not only cost lives, but they are also an economic hazard for any country. So, with less human intervention in driving the cars and more robots taking over as drivers, these economic hazards can be controlled to a large extent.

Easy accessibility for people who cannot drive
Age or physical disabilities make commuting for several people a challenge. But with autonomous vehicles, this will no longer be a problem. Also, there will be no need for people to have driving licenses or tests to drive a vehicle. This means people who were earlier not fit to be drivers will now be able to move around in their own vehicle without putting their or anyone else’s life at risk.

Cons

Reduction in driving jobs
There are many people whose livelihood depends on driving vehicles. Taxi drivers, bus drivers, and truck drivers might struggle to find work once autonomous vehicles are on the road. There will be many employers who will prefer to invest in self-driving vehicles rather than pay monthly wages to a driver.

Risk of hacking
Just like computer systems, autonomous vehicles will be programmed in a way to function properly. But having a system operating the vehicle, they will be susceptible to attacks by hackers and even crashing due to a technical problem. If the car gets hacked, it will be under the control of the hacker who can easily reprogram it. Therefore, security might be an area of concern with these vehicles.

Time-consuming process and negativity
There many benefits being associated with autonomous vehicles. But the process of integrating the vehicles will consume a lot of time. Also, the acceptance of autonomous vehicles among people might take a while. Though there are a lot of accidents taking place in non-automated vehicles, when or if they happen in the case of an autonomous vehicle, the incidents will attract a lot of negativity or condemnation from the general public.
